Chapter fourteen

Lindsey

Day 98: Raven Rock Mountain Complex

1 a.m.

She barely heard the click of the door being locked. For a few seconds, she lay there wondering if she’d been dreaming, but all she could hear was the rhythmic breathing of her companions. She tilted her head onto her elbow and identified first Silas’s semi-snore, and then the almost silent breathing of Talia.

Lindsey’s bed was beside the door, so she reached up and tried the handle, heart racing. It didn’t move. Could she hear boots moving quietly along the corridor outside? What was happening.

″Talia!” she hissed.

The Israeli was instantly awake. “What is it?”

″We’ve been locked in. Don’t turn the light on!”

Talia froze. “No, they must think we’re asleep, you’re right.” She reached across to Silas and shook him gently, pressing her palm over his mouth. “Quiet! Do not make a sound. Someone has locked the door.”

Silas sat up, his bed creaking beneath him, wiping his mouth. He crawled across the floor on his knees and gently pulled at the door handle.

″I can get us out,” Talia said, her voice barely above a whisper. Then, in answer to Lindsey’s surprised gasp, “In my training we were taught never to go somewhere you couldn’t get out of. Are either of you armed?”

Lindsey shook her head.

″I’ve got a knife,” Silas said, shrugging. “I keep it in my boots during the day and under my pillow at bedtime.”

Talia had a set of keys in her pocket that connected via a chain to her belt loops. She unfolded what looked like a set of tiny hex keys and selected one. “These are from a perfectly innocent luthier set. They just happen to be good for opening doors as well as fixing guitars. Give me your knife, Silas, and I will go find out what is happening.”

″Only if you let me come with you,” Silas said.

For a moment Talia’s eyes locked on Lindsey’s, then she nodded. “You know I could take it off you if I wanted?”

Silas smiled. “Not without a lot of noise. You stay here, Mrs. Lang, and we’ll do a recce.”

″No, that’s not happening. I’m coming.”

Again, Talia looked across at her as she fiddled with the door lock. “You must both stay behind me and follow my orders. Agreed?”

″Agreed,” Lindsey said.

″Sure. How long will it take to pick the lock?”

Talia gently pulled the handle down. “It is done.” She took the knife from Silas and opened the door, every tiny creak seeming to invite attention.

The dim red of the night-time lighting showed nothing in the corridor outside, but now the door was open, they could hear voices nearby.

″It’s the control room, sounds like a ruckus,” Silas said.

They snuck along the corridor, Talia leading the way with Lindsey at the back. At least two people were arguing in hoarse whispers, and they were almost outside the door by the time Lindsey recognized the voice of Major Rubin.

″I cannot authorize this, it’s inhuman!”

She knew which voice she’d hear next. “I repeat, Major. I am your commander in chief, and you will obey my orders.
